 Mentorship Programs

America Needs You (ANY) provides each student with one-on-one mentorship, extensive professional networks, internship support, and a structured career development curriculum. ANY's Fellows graduate from college, secure employment, and succeed after graduation at higher rates than their peers.

The City Mentors program helps professionals and companies deliver immediate short term professional development assistance and career exploration support to communities historically underserved and especially vulnerable to the job market challenges brought on by the pandemic. The program is available to anyone in the community that needs help. It workw with largely 16-24 year olds who are currently in college, or recently graduated. 

Diverse Influencers provides CUNY students with a free academic year-long program consisting of career prep workshops and one-on-one mentorship to build soft and hard skills. The organization envisions a workforce where underrepresented CUNY graduates possess the in-demand skills and experiences that employers seek. 

Rewriting the Code supports and empowers college, graduate and early career women in tech, through intersectional communities, mentorship, industry experience and educational resources, to become the next generation of engineers and tech leaders. 

Two Sigma Mentorship for Sophomore Students for BIPOC identifying students pairs early college students from historically underrepresented groups in STEM with Two Sigma tech professionals on open-source projects in a learning-focused environment.

Jobs & Internship Programs

Code2040's aim is to focus on supporting early-career tech talent, from college and graduate-level computer science students to Black & Latinx technologists navigating their first jobs. Our core programs have developed from our learnings and data to address the issues driving systemic exclusion of Black and Latinx technologists in the tech sector.

HackNY's aim is to build a diverse and inclusive tech community to empower the next generation of responsible leaders in NYC. Since 2010, hackNY has empowered a community of student-technologists in New York City through the annual Fellows Program and student hackathons. hackNY is co-organized by faculty from NYU, Columbia, and Harvard Business School.

LifeSci NYC Internship Program is the City of New York's innovative, paid internship program to develop the City's next generation of life sciences leaders. The program provides quality internships for undergraduate and graduate students, while offering curriculum and training support with refined "hard" skills in the sciences and "soft" skills of professional and personal development. 

Mott Haven Fridge is a not-for-profit organization powering an army of volunteer drivers who bring fresh produce to community refrigerators located on NYC sidewalks. They are building a scalable solution to reach all neighbors in need, even those that other forms of food assistance never could.

New York Edge STEM Specialist (link is for a Brooklyn position; more available here) - New York Edge is a non-profit organization and one of the largest providers of school-based afterschool programs in New York City and the metropolitan region. The mission of New York Edge is to help bridge the opportunity gap among underserved students by providing programs designed to improve academic performance, health and wellness, self-confidence, character and attitudes for success in life. We impact more than 25,000 students from over 120 sites in grades K-12 typically in underserved neighborhoods.

NYC Planning Data Engineering, a unit within EDM, modernizes legacy data processes, manages cloud data infrastructure, and develops critical data products such as PLUTO. Our data products and data infrastructure support a myriad of data systems and applications used by NYC Planning, other city agencies, and the public.

NYC Cyber Command is committed to protecting City systems that provide vital services to New Yorkers from cyber threats, and helping residents become safer in their digital lives. As the organization defending the largest municipality in the country, NYC3 is charged with directing citywide incident response, setting citywide cybersecurity policies and standards and working with city agencies to strengthen their cyber defenses

Visible Hands Designers and Engineers Program entails 8-weeks of professional development programming for underrepresented talent in tech who are interested in exploring opportunities with early-stage, venture-backed startups. This program will be structured into two tracks, one dedicated to supporting designers and the other dedicated to supporting engineers.

Winternships and Sprinternships are programs for women and non-binary students interested in CS and CS majors. They generally last 3 weeks in January. They are run by Cornell University's Break Through Tech. Although they are short, that does not diminish their importance. Winternships/Sprinternships are a great way to get some experience and build networks and connections. Many if not most of these programs lead to summer internships. 

Bootcamps, Fellowships, and Accelerators

Basta aims to create a bridge of opportunity between employers and first-generation college goers of color to increase knowledge workforce diversity at all levels and foster a world in which a college degree provides equitable access to a choice-filled life.

CodePath Technical Interview Prep is a 12-week virtual course taught by professional engineers will help you ace technical interviews preparing you to solve challenging algorithm problems in real whiteboard interviews at top companies. Computer Science undergraduate students looking for internships/full-time software engineering jobs that want to improve their confidence and speed in technical interviews should apply

CodePath Courses in iOS, Android, and Cybersecurity are industry-backed and project based. These hands-on courses will give you the resources to build your own functioning mobile app or help you develop a hacker's mindset through an offensive approach to cybersecurity. Last semester students from Hunter built mobile applications and landed internships and jobs through CodePath's Virtual Career Fair.

CUNY Upskilling is a curated list of no-cost virtual trainings that will help you get the latest professional skills and knowledge to give yourself a leg up in your job search and help you shine to prospective employers. In addition, if you are recently unemployed or dislocated, our New York State Department of Labor partnership with Coursera can help you land on your feet.

Dorm Room Fund's Female Investor Track is a 3-week masterclass bringing the brightest women from across the country to learn from the best investors, founders, and fund managers in the space

8.0 Pursuit Fellowship - 8.0 is a social impact organization that trains adults to get their first tech jobs, advance in their careers, and become the next generation of leaders in tech. Our mission is to create transformation where it's needed most. We highly encourage women, non-binary and trans-identifying people, communities underrepresented in tech, and those without college degrees to apply. You do not need any coding experience to be admitted into the program.

Major League Hacking Fellowship is a remote internship alternative for aspiring technologists. Fellows spend 12 weeks building their skills by collaborating on real-world projects.

New Enterprise Associates Fellowship is a two-semester-long opportunity for current students to work directly with the NEA investment team in New York. It is designed to provide an unparalleled experience focused on learning the business of venture capital and witnessing the building of companies from the ground up.

Techquitable Futures is a free 10-week fellowship program pairing college students from underrepresented backgrounds interested in software engineering with mentors at top companies in the industry to receive career mentorship. Our falls cohort begins in mid-October and any interested students are encouraged to apply

Scholarships

Exabeam Cybersecurity Scholarship Program is an initiative designed to support the next generation of professionals in pursuing an education and career in the security field. For the first time, the scholarship program will award the first-place winner a paid internship in the department of their choice in addition to $10,000. The runner up will receive a $5,000 scholarship.

FS-ISAC Promoting Women in Cybersecurity Scholarship is 100 percent funded through the generosity of its members and affiliates. Through contributing sponsorships, firms provide both financial support and mentorship to rising young women pursuing cybersecurity careers in financial services in the United States, Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East or Africa.

Watermark Scholarship for Women in STEM is an extension of the organization's women's leadership initiative, Women at Watermark, a technical women's organization designed to encourage the growth of women's leadership through lifelong learning and professional development, mentorship, and service. It offers two $5000 annual women in STEM scholarships for the fall 2021 academic term to support college students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)-related studies and career.

Hackathons and Other Events

HackNY's aim is to build a diverse and inclusive tech community to empower the next generation of responsible leaders in NYC. Hacktoberfest encourages participation in giving back to the open source community by completing pull requests, participating in events, and donating to open source projects. All backgrounds and skills levels are encouraged to complete this virtual challenge.

Hunter Career Fairs are available for students and alumni from all majors at Hunter College, who'll have a chance to network with companies from various fields, including healthcare, social services, business, education, and more.

Out in Tech is the world's largest non-profit community of LGBTQ+ tech leaders. It creates opportunities for its 40,000 members to advance their careers, grow their networks, and leverage tech for social change

Responsible Tech Summit is an all-day gathering that brings together a diverse range of participants that are committed to building a better tech future.
