Internships

Please note that internships are almost a prerequisite now to getting a full-time job right after getting a Bachelors degree. Additionally, the more experience you can gain from internships before applying to regular jobs, the better. Students are encouraged to seek out internships early on.

For Freshman & Sophomores

Some large companies (JPMC, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter) have freshman-sophomore and other diversity focused internships. A list of these programs can be accessed here: Freshman/Sophomore/Diversity Internships

Winternships are a program for women interested in CS and CS majors. They generally last 3 weeks in January. They are run by WiTNY (Women in Technology and Entrepreneurship in New York). Although they are short, that does not diminish their importance. Winternships are a great way to get some experience and build networks and connections. Many if not most winternships lead to summer internships. The link is here.

For Juniors & Seniors

There are quite a few internships opportunities available for CS students. For the purposes of this program, the internships here will be broken into five different sections:

Industry internships are in F

all, Spring, Summer, and Winter, and academic Internships.

Internship requirements may be similar

.

Firstly, Summer internships are the most competitive. Large tech companies and banks usually open their summer internship applications as early as August or September of the prior year (so if you are looking to get a summer internship for 2020, you'd have to apply in the fall of 2019). Tech industry internships are generally paid, either minimum wage or slightly higher. These are the most sought after, which make them the most competitive. Some smaller companies hire for summer during the spring semester.

Fall and Spring Internships are less common because students are also in classes; they are still valuable and can be less competitive. The internships are part time, so the student can focus on both the work on hand as well as their school work. Academic semester internships last 13 or 14 weeks, but total fewer work hours than summer internships.

Tech industry internships pay at least minimum wage, usually much more, depending on the company.

CUNY 2x has an updated list of internships available for all students, which can be accessed here: CUNY 2X Internships

An example of internships available to students is the following:

Code for Good - Participants come to a JPMC location to

work alongside technology experts in teams to solve real-world problems for nonprofits. This is a hackathon and a JPMC recruiting mechanism. Many individuals find work there as there are a ton of recruiters that are here.  Click here for more information on Code for Good. The internships listed above are available to all students.
