  • Advising Structure

All freshmen at Hunter receive a peer advisor. Students expressing interest in computer science will also be able to see Amanda Bell as their academic advisor. Your advisors can help with course selection, understanding academic requirements, major declaration, choosing a major, career exploration, academic issues, and more. When you are ready to declare your major (by the end of your fourth semester or before you have completed 60 credits), you should speak with Amanda to fill out a major declaration form. After you declare a major in computer science and you have finished or are taking CSCI 235, you'll be assigned to Justin Tojeira for major-specific advising. Justin is your resource for planning your major requirements, asking about specific computer science courses, working out departmental-level issues, and discussing post-graduate and career planning opportunities. You can also reach out to any faculty member to set up a time to talk with them about research opportunities, graduate school, and career planning.

    Why Major in CS?

There are a lot of different things you can do with a computer science degree. Even if you decide you don't want to be a programmer, it is still a useful major and gives you valuable skills you can use in related fields. While you are in school, it is important to take the time to do some career exploration to read about different career options and explore what might be a good fit for you. You cannot rely on other people to tell you what jobs you should do; only you really know what interests you. While you can talk through ideas with other people, it's important that you do the research yourself. Informational interviews are also helpful in this process because you can talk with professionals working in different fields to get a better understanding of what they actually do and decide whether the job sounds appealing to you.
